We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave . . . So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."
All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.
Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The high-water mark of the 60's generation hit its high point and then rolled back, to paraphrase H.S. Thompson, said so beautifully. But the wave metaphor stops there, because a wave never rolls back permanently; but so far, he seems to be correct, and the metaphor seems to be holding. It appears that an ephemeral ocean appeared for a brief time, made its waves, and vanished. But if a literal, physical wave were to roll far back enough, it might be indicative of an impending Tsunami. Can there be an invisible, noumenal Tsunami? It's the Age of Aquarius, something they sung about back in those days.
If indeed psychedelics could open the mind, and they can, why didn't more people become enlightened? What did, say, the San Francisco acid wave accomplish? Granted there are still stragglers and refugees out there, but most of the traces of that generation are gone from the public arena, except showing up every now and then in caricature or statements of fashion.
This mundane world is a whorl, it is a "whorld" of chaos and of hidden bifurcations, i.e., secret Attractors. Some beings ascend, some fall, some stay the same, some oscillate, and so on. The forces and beings that embody and evince the telos of the Cosmos are the Attractors behind the scenes of Chaos, and they are those who tend the light, the light at the end of all tunnels. Everything falls apart without maintenance, because the phenomenal whorld is a whorld of entropy; even psilocybin mushrooms are sentient, they are elvin yokai-beings who afford peeks behind the veil, but maintenance is what makes consonant with attractors, with telos, and not the act of "opening the mind" itself, not the act of assimilating substances to go through psychic portals, per se. What matters is maintenance and upkeep, or else all will eventually go to entropy; but it would be a huge mistake to think that this maintenance and upkeep consist of keeping those doors open by way of continuous substance-use. That in itself will become entropic.
How then are maintenance and upkeep to be done, sans ingestion of substance, etc., after having experienced the "unveiling" of the sparkling light of the inner Cosmos? Do what feels right to you, whether it's art, sports, hiking, music, gardening, etc., and know that your mind-state, though not in any state of psychedelic high, is still nonetheless nondual, and one and the same with it. And by virtue of this very argument, that "wave" of that bygone generation is still billowing; it's only become more subtle, more sublimated, more evolved, that's all.
