The Devolution Paradigm

There is a backwards-motion paradigm in the world. It embraces devolution and reversal. The seeming forwards-motion of time should be indication, an extremely obvious one, so obvious that it goes undetected, undetected as gravity till Newton mentioned it, undetected as is water to aquatic life that live in it, as undetected as chemical element O by all who breathed it prior to its "discovery"; it is right in everyone's face from time immemorial, it's an aspect of the second thermodynamic law, that time is irreversible, that the course of the Cosmos seems to be going forward and never backward, that even cycles are spirals that move up a notch from their previous starting points.

There is a devolution paradigm in the world, which points an accusatory finger at anything which would negate, transcend, abrogate, and sublimate that paradigm. The devolution paradigm. The devolution paradigm is based in fear, it teaches fear, and is an expression of fear. The Minotaur of the Age of Taurus is at the center of its labyrinth, as it was trapped provisionally by the Age of Aries; the Ram was rejected by the Age of Pisces. The Fish of the Age of Pisces can now swim freely in the deluge of the Age of Aquarius, and the active principles of Air are ubiquitous above its oceanic horizon, and even within the nectar-ocean, even unto the very bottom, and beyond. There is a teleological process at work. But the devolution paradigm says No. It says there is no teleological process of a conscious Cosmos.

Devolution is the path of going backwards, and hence “backward-masking” has been attributed to infernal speech. The teachings which promote devolution are all backward-masking. Devolution is contrary to the teleology of the Cosmos, because the Cosmos does not devolve. Cycles in the Cosmos are not actual cycles, but spirals of sublimation. Hence the so-called cyclical path of the Cosmos does not “go back,” it ascends to the next level, the next phase of refinement of seeming repetitions. But even repetition, which is a necessary heuristic, is not the same as devolution. Devolution is the mode of dismantling evolution in the present, and the attempt to keep going back further and further into the less evolved past, which is a process of embracing entropy and chaos; because at the end of that tunnel is the primordial White Noise, which is but only one aspect of threefold reality: Chaos, provisional order (Habit), and Telos (sublimation).

A One-Way Journey into the Rabbit Hole

A One-Way Journey into the Rabbit Hole

(John David Sheliak)

Introduction

In early June of 2010, I made a Facebook contact that was to dramatically alter my life path in ways that I could not have possibly imagined.  The contact that began with a series of exchanges over the writings of Carlos Castaneda, would lead me on a journey into the heart of Eastern Europe – with its intriguing history, its open and warmhearted people, as well as a few of its cultural mysteries.  The journey that I began in 2010 is still ongoing and it is long and complex, so I won’t attempt a full narrative here.  The complete story will have to be the stuff of future articles and publications, and for now I’ll only outline the story as background for the interview article that I will be posting with this introduction.

My would-be Facebook contact was someone who was a suggested friend – i.e. the ‘friend’ of someone who I had met only once during a conversation I was having with another friend at a local cafĂ© here in Santa Fe.  Normally I paid very little attention to so-called ‘friend suggestions’ since most of the time they were acquaintances of acquaintances, etc, etc.  Yet on this particular night I felt more motivated than usual to at least have a look at this prospective friend’s Facebook page.  Once there, I immediately noticed that there were a number of comments and other references to Carlos Castaneda’s writings – something that had also been an ongoing interest of mine, to include me having read every one of his books.  So I sent a brief message describing my interests in Castaneda’s work, and asking about the significance of the Castaneda references that were posted on my prospect’s Facebook profile page.

The following day she accepted my friend request, responded with a brief message of her own, and this initial exchange led to an ongoing series of Facebook, Skype, and email exchanges over the next several weeks.  I learned during our initial exchanges that she was Slovak woman living in Bratislava, and that she spoke no English whatsoever.  Nonetheless, even though she spoke no English (and I spoke no Slovak), it so happened that she was living with a partner who not only spoke reasonably good English, but he also had a very strong interest in Castaneda’s work, Terence McKenna’s work and ideas, and he was a professional writer.  So thanks mostly to him and a little to Google translate, we were able to have a number of detailed and in depth conversations and written exchanges on many of our shared topics of interest.

Old Town - Bratislava, Slovakia
Over the course of the next few weeks, our dialog became increasingly extensive, intriguing, energizing, and provocative.   Consequently, we all began to feel that it could be interesting and mutually beneficial for me make the journey to Slovakia – in order to expand our conversations and develop our connection.  So I made the necessary arrangements, and in mid-September of 2010 I boarded a plane bound for Vienna, Austria, to be met there by my new found friends, followed a 45 minute drive to Bratislava - the capitol city of the Slovak Republic.  Our plan was for me to stay in Bratislava for the first two weeks, in an apartment that they had arranged for me; and then together we were to spend my final two weeks there sharing a cottage in the Kysuca region (Kee-soo-tya) of NW Slovakia near the Czech border.  The consequences of that fateful decision are continuously reverberating throughout my life process in unforeseen and unimaginable ways.  And this particular story seems to have path and a will of its’ own.

Our 'Conversation Cafe' of Choice
Those first two weeks spent in Bratislava included ongoing explorations of the city, daily meetings with my two new friends, and a shared weekend dinner at their apartment.  Our daily meetings took place in late afternoon and often continued into the late evening, in the old town area of Bratislava - usually at one or the other of our two favorite cafes there.  These long conversations included in-depth and detailed discussions of Castaneda’s work, as well as some of the ideas and work of Terence McKenna  - both of whom are well known in Slovak alternative and psychedelic circles.  Our lengthy evening conversations also included discussions of my collaborative work with McKenna - the nature and consequences of the revision and mathematical formalization that I had developed for him in 1997.  These discussions were to continue expanding – traveling ever deeper into the Rabbit Hole - during the many lengthy evening conversations that we were to have at our shared cottage in Kysuca.

On a Friday of my second week in Slovakia, we packed our car with supplies, two dogs, and three of the most non-ordinary of friends, and departed Bratislava headed for the NE mountain region of Kysuca.  It’s a beautiful drive through open pastures, villages, and expanding hills as we make our way to the western end of the Carpathian Mountain range in Northern Slovakia.  Slovakia is a small, yet stunningly beautiful country that is filled with a wide variety of tree-topped and snow-capped mountains as one drives north and east from Bratislava.  The land and people whom I encountered along the way have a rich and fascinating history that includes many struggles against oppressive tyranny and foreign invasion.  I found the Slovak people to be openhearted, open-minded, and exceedingly generous, even when they have very little for themselves.

Our Cottage in a Fairytale Setting
When we arrived in the Kysuca region, we made a couple of stops to get directions from locals since the entrance road off the main paved roadway was difficult to spot, even in daylight.  The entrance road to our cottage is a small and rocky dirt road that leads us through a dark and almost fairy-tale like forest where I am reminded of a line from one of Robert Frost’s poems:  “The woods are lovely, dark, and deep; but I have promises to keep; and miles to go before I sleep.”  Continuing to about 6 km in we begin to see several small houses and cottages, then we turn left up a steepening slope, and finally turn right into the parking area of our cottage.  It is an almost unbelievable sight, as though looking at some painting that cannot be real, as our cottage comes into full view.  The site of our cottage is evocative of imagery from many of the fairy tales of my youth – and standing there, assimilating the sight before me, I begin to understand some of the origins of fairy-tale imagery; and I was standing right in the middle of it!

Amanita muscaria – everywhere
This was to be our home for the next two incredible weeks, and I felt a sense of ‘magic in the air’ as I stared transfixed at this almost mystical sight.  We were to have many extraordinary conversations and experiences here, several moments of unbridled laughter, wonder-filled hikes throughout the surrounding countryside, and meals that were meant and fit for royalty.  There were a few challenges as well, but this would by no means interfere with such an amazing journey of life-altering change and expansion that was about to unfold within each of us on a scale that none of us could have foreseen nor imagined.

Many of our conversations included discussions of Terence McKenna’s work, and specifically his work and ideas concerning Novelty Theory and the Timewave.  Karol - who was the skilled writer among us - was particularly interested in those concepts, as well as my collaboration with McKenna in revising and formalizing Timewave mathematics.  Karol had written the screenplay of the popularly successful Slovak film ‘Fountain for Susan’ released in 1986, and directed by Dusan Rapos.  By the time our paths crossed he had also written several Slovak magazine articles, as well ongoing articles for his blog site, and a number of articles on the popular Slovak site, Cez-Okno.  At some point during our conversations, Karol suggested that many of the Cez-Okno website’s readers might also be interested in hearing what I had to say about, McKenna, the Timewave, the I-Ching, and the apocalyptic prophesies concerning 2012.  He said that he could arrange an interview with the director of the Cez-Okno website, if I felt that I wanted to do it.  It sounded like an intriguing idea so I agreed.

My Cottage Work Table & Environs
My room at the cottage was the first floor room, and it was furnished with a conveniently located table that was ideal for personal and dream journaling, as well as other writing that I wanted to do while I was there. The room was quite nice and very comfortable, with a fold-out bed, couch and chairs, intriguing art, traditional Slovak needlework to adorn the several windows that were bringing pleasantly filtered sunlight into the room from three sides during the course of each day.

View from My Room
I also had my notebook computer with me, so I was pretty well set up to comfortably respond to the written questions that I was about to receive.  A few days after my conversation with Karol,  I received an email from Cez-Okno that included greetings and ten interview questions for me to answer.  Those questions and my responses are all contained in what follows this introduction.  I hope that readers will find those exchanges as interesting if not as informative today, as they were three years ago.  The rest of this most unusual and fascinating story will have to wait for another time.

The Cez-Okno 'Interview"

********************************************************************************

Dear John,

Allow me at a distance, and virtually, to welcome you to our internet journal. For you to travel here all the way from New Mexico, 'the Land of Enchantment' – there must be something behind it. Can you now tell us the reason for your journey?

********************************************************************************

This first question requires a little background information for others to fully understand any answer that I could give, so forgive me for this somewhat long-winded response.

Many, or most believe that life process is driven from behind – pushed from past into future;  that motivation is dominated by past perceptions and experiences, and that the future is little more than a passive receptacle for a past-driven process.  My life has followed another perspective entirely - a path that seems to have been always and relentlessly pulled forward by some unseen, unknown, and mysterious future state 'attractor'.

Complex systems theory, or non-linear dynamics, or chaos theory – all one system of thought – describe a cosmos in which life process, and process in general, are all pulled forward, from the past through chaotic phases, into the future by entities that are called attractors, or strange attractors.  The past, in this view, is analogous to the chem-trail emissions left behind by jet aircraft, as it travels from origin to destination - or little more that the 'exhaust' of the present that soon dissipates into irrelevance.  Moreover, when we consider the course or trajectory of our life processes, these principles are more than likely the facts of the matter.  In fact, this is how nature and the cosmos actually work.

My journey from the ’Land of Enchantment‘ (as we call New Mexico), to the serene mountains of northern Slovakia is an intriguing story that begins with a complex entanglement (interaction) of a career in physics with an ever expanding life process imbued with deep mystical features and highly non-ordinary facets.  Dreams have been an important part of my life process as far back as I can remember, providing me with guidance, healing, and an expansive and mystical perspective of the world and cosmos that we inhabit, and that also inhabits us.  The shamanic practices of native cultures have also intrigued me much of my adult life.  These interests and fascinations eventually led me to the into the native cultural mysteries described by Castaneda as Don Juan’s world; then into the dream-centered plant-based shamanism of the indigenous Huichol culture in central Mexico; and finally into the philosophy and mysteries of the plant-based shamanism described by Terence McKenna.  I was intrigued, and even mystified by the use of psychoactive plants in various aboriginal cultures, and by the power and primacy of one’s direct experience in nature and the cosmos.  One night in early June at my home near Santa Fe, after a long days work and far too much

work in general, I was feeling emotionally and physically exhausted.  One of my relaxation rituals in transitioning from work to home environment was to check email, and occasionally look at my Facebook page for messages or comments made by friends and family.  This particular night I noticed that I had one friend suggestion on my Facebook page.  Normally I pay very little attention to such suggestions, because they are always friends of friends, so there isn’t much felt connection to these unknown others for me.  And to be honest I simply do not have time to be adding a host of unknown people to my limited list of friends and family.  This time however, there was a felt difference in the photo of this friend suggestion that caught my attention.  So I clicked on the link and went to the Facebook page of some unknown woman from some unknown place.  The only frame of reference for me was a mutual friend who lived in Santa Fe – although I had only met her once while talking with another friend and owner of a local cafe in Santa Fe.

My Home near Santa Fe, New Mexico
My New 'Territory' in Bratislava's Old Town
Once at the Facebook page of this suggested friend, however, two things caught my attention:  lucid dreaming as an activity, and a reference to a book by Taisha Abelar – a protege of Carlos Castaneda.  So I sent a friend request describing my interest in dreams and dreaming, and my connection to the writings of Carlos Castaneda.  A ensuing and expanding dialog emerged with this new friend, who turned out to be a woman living in Bratislava, Slovakia.  Over the course of a year my work had been taking far too much of my time and energy, and I was ready for a

long break for an extended period of rest and
relaxation.  I hadn’t yet been to Europe for a
vacation, so I thought that this might be an opportunity for both rest and to explore a part of the world that I had not yet experienced, as well as an opportunity to continue this dialog in person, and connect with others who apparently shared significant features of my world view.  So arrangements were made and the rest is history, as we say.

********************************************************************************

From some of Karol's recent articles I had suspected that there was something in the air, and the last one he published confirmed this to me; but the reality of this interview has still taken me aback. Our readers certainly know of Terence McKenna. His theory may seem to be difficult for some to understand, but I believe it can be partially explained in at a few sentences...

********************************************************************************

Well, ... Terence had perspectives on just about anything that one might imagine; although I assume in this case you are referring to the Timewave, the I-Ching, and the year 2012.

I met Terence at a workshop in Boulder, Colorado during the summer of 1990 or 1991.  I had heard of him from a good friend in Santa Fe who had given me some of his tapes to listen to.  I was intrigued by his very articulate and graphic use of language and the overall gracious and humorous manner in which he expressed himself.  During that weekend in Boulder, he spent the entire day on Sunday talking about his Novelty Theory including a demonstration of the graphical expression of that theory, or Timewave, on his computer.  The Timewave is simply a graphical or abstract expression of Novelty Theory.  The essence of Novelty Theory is quite simple, and can be stated as the creation and conservation of increasingly higher-ordered states of complex form.  Complex form evolves from simple form, and the increasing complexity is accompanied by increasing integration, or interconnection.  Higher ordered integration simply means that individual systems are more highly integrated or interconnected to serve some greater function, purpose, or whole..  Higher-ordered can also be seen as multidimensional, or hyper-dimensional, meaning ever expanding degrees of freedom – or an expanding capacity for movement in, and navigation of expanding dimensions of space and time.

As an example, when one looks at the creation and evolution of the cosmos one sees a cosmos that was initially very simple – a small, dense, and very hot plasma devoid of any form as we know it.  Over time as the cosmos cooled, then expanded very rapidly during an inflationary phase, increasingly complex form was created.  Fundamental particles evolved to elemental atomic structures to molecules, and eventually to stars, planets, and the multitude of other increasingly complex form that we see around us today – including organic life and other complex systems integrated into a biosphere of the 3rd planet from an ordinary yellow star in the suburbs of a whirling collection of stars that we call the Milky Way galaxy.  Additionally the cosmos conserves much of its complex form by preserving the information content of such form.  Thus we have the concept of energy conservation, mass conservation, momentum conservation; and for the Timewave we have information or Novelty conservation.

The 'Monolith‘ near Jupiter in the Film „2010, The Year that We Make Contact
The same evolutionary concept can be applied to an individual planet, and individual species and its cultural forms, and IMO an individual life-form such as ourselves.  Novelty Theory is simply an attempt to characterize such evolutionary process in terms of a kind of temporal mechanics, or complex notion of time that is fractal or self-similar in nature.  In other words, any evolutionary process from simple to more complex form occurs in the crucible of fractal time – or time that includes non-linear or self-similar features at all time scales of an embedded evolutionary process.  In simple terms this means that any process occurring in time as viewed on a small scale – say over a one year period -  has very similar structural features to a process occurring in time on much larger scales – say over a thousand year period.  In an individual‘s life process one can see similar patterns whether one looks at a 20 year time span, or a 6 month time span.

In summary, we live in a cosmos and on a planet having evolutionary processes that create and conserve increasingly higher-ordered states of complex form - Information or Novelty.  Such complex form is evolving in a manner that includes becoming more highly integrated, or interconnected, to function in service to some greater whole.

******************************************************************************
From the mystical I-Ching - a prophecy, and an oracle.  People turn to it with the most hidden of hopes, desires, and expectations. But what do mathematics have in common with it? Calculations? Graphs?

*********************************************************************************

The I-Ching Oracle
Mathematics is the fundamental language of form and function in nature as well as the language of relationships in nature.  The I-Ching - and I am by no means an expert on it – is another language of form and function, and of relationships in one’s individual life process.  Nearly everything in nature has holographic features – or self-similar features.  This simply means that the image of the whole is contained in every piece of the hologram – or patterns appearing at large scales, also appear at increasingly smaller scales.  The I-Ching is a system of thought that is linked to human experience through abstract symbols.  These abstractions are symbolic transformations that change one form of matter/energy into another form of matter/energy.  In the case of the I-Ching there is a presumed energetic link between the life process of the consulting person, and the pattern of coins or sticks that results from that person throwing the coins or sticks.  The resulting hexagram created by this pattern of coins or sticks is an abstract symbol for the pattern of life process that is related to the intention or thought of the one casting the coins or sticks.  If one accepts the premise of an energetic link between the person throwing such coins or sticks, then the I-Ching as a system of thought becomes quite plausible.  The holographic and even quantum features of nature and the cosmos would then manifest themselves in this system of thought through its symbolism.

King Wen Hexagram Sequence
The I-Ching has a number of mathematical features that have been explored by many others, including the relationship between the 64 hexagrams of the I-Ching and the 64 codons of human DNA.  The relevant mathematical feature in relation to your question is, of course‚ 'the first order of difference‘ as McKenna described it.  Each hexagram of the I-Ching has six lines stacked on above another.  Each line is either solid or broken in the center.  The value of the hexagram is determined by the sequence of solid and broken lines contained therein.  In hexagram 1 of the King Wen sequence, for example, all six lines are solid.  In hexagram 2, all six lines are broken.  The first order of difference is simply the number of lines that change as one moves from hexagram to hexagram over the sequence of 64 hexagrams.  When moving from hexagram 1 to hexagram 2 in the King Wen sequence, all six lines change from all solid to all broken lines.  Thus the first order of difference is determined to be 6 in this case.  For the remaining hexagrams the first order of difference varies from 2 to 5.  So for Terence McKenna’s system of thought, the first order of difference for the King Wen sequence of the I-Ching, produces a set of 64 numbers as one steps through each pair of hexagrams beginning with hexagram 1.  This is the basic or fundamental number set that is used to construct the Timewave.  Additional mathematical operations are performed on this basic number set to produce the Timewave graphs that many are now familiar with.

Timewave Vector Analysis
My work with the Timewave began after my first meeting with Terence in Boulder, Colorado.  I was intrigued by his concept of an I-Ching based Timewave, and his perspective about time when he presented his work at this meeting.  As a scientist and mathematician I also thought that such a 'waveform‘ and system of thought should be able to lend itself  to a deeper exploration and more complex mathematical description and analysis if it was in fact was a true representation of some fundamental feature of nature or 'reality‘.   I expressed some of these ideas to Terence after the workshop, and told him that I would like to begin a more detailed analysis of his Novelty Theory and Timewave.  He was intrigued by my proposal and told me that he would put me in touch with the mathematician who wrote his Timewave software, so that I could have the software modified in order to make it more user-friendly for mathematical analysis.

After an initial period of developing the mathematical approach for Timewave analysis, and having the software modifications completed, it became clear to me that this was likely going to take a lot more thought and effort, in addition to requiring much easier  access to large volumes of historical data than I had at the time.  High speed internet access was limited to institutions and comparatively few individuals, and was expensive.  Moreover, there was no Wikipedia or comparable source of historical information to draw upon.  So I suspended my work until technological advances permitted easier access to the information that I needed.  Consequently, about 3 years later I decided to make another attempt at a mathematical exploration of the Timewave, so I went to Terence’s website to see what the status of the Timeave was.  It was then that I discovered the Watkins objection on Terence’s website – written by a British mathematician who had discovered inconsistencies in the mathematical development of the Timewave.  Watkins then challenged Terence to explain these mathematical inconsistencies or abandon his theory and Timewave entirely.

The Watkins investigation and challenge changed my perspective about the Timewave and forced me to do my own investigation of the fundamental mathematics that he had exposed.  My investigation ultimately led me to the conclusion that Watkins had indeed exposed a significant error in the mathematical development of the Timewave.  Unlike Watkins, however, I did not think that this error was fatal to Novelty Theory, and I also thought that the error could be corrected.  I explained this to Terence and asked him if he was interested in having me correct and formalize his mathematics.  He expressed a definite interest, so I proceeded with that work and published a paper covering my mathematical and philosophical formalization of the Timewave.  The rest of this story and the published work is posted on my website for anyone to read.

*********************************************************************************
Perhaps it is better if all of this were to remain veiled with mystery and magic. Anyway, the significant thing is perhaps the interest in our own life and how to grow and improve our life process. Yet surely there are people out there, who to the contrary,  a scientific explanation will provide insights or open a Portal (Gateway) into their own lives, and perhaps this in the twelfth hour or 'nick of time‘...

*********************************************************************************

In my veiw there are mysteries that will forever remain mysteries (certainly during the course of many human generations and/or lifetimes) – hence the term mysticism, or mysteries related to as mysteries, and not as problems to be solved nor explained.  The great mysteries of life and existence – where we come from – why we are here – where we are going – who and what is God – are among the great mysteries of life and existence that scientific process cannot nor need not address for the time being.
The Mystery and Wonder of Cosmic Proportions
However, there is a domain between physics and the mystical that I think is fertile ground that could very well be explored with the tools and within the structure of science.  In this domain the imagery and language in the domain of physics or science can become entangled with the imagery and language of the mystical domain.  Thus the embedded mathematical features of an ancient and mystical Chinese oracle could be transformed into a fractal waveform and theory of time that is mapped to the evolution of  life process on planet Earth.

Any scientific 'explanation‘ or theory is only an attempt to characterize some process in terms of language and imagery that have the power to evoke some level of understanding of how things may actually work in the context of current levels of awareness and understanding.  In the case of the Timewave, the language and imagery of physics and mathematics are used to transform the somewhat archaic symbolism of the I-Ching into a form that can be visualized graphically as a fractal representation of historical process on planet Earth.  Such a graphical rendering is established in the context of a non-linear theory of time called Novelty Theory.

In science theoretical 'backup‘ is an essential part of the scientific process that allows one to correlate experimental observations with the language and imagery of how things might actually work.  Moreover, theory is simply 'a way of looking‘, or a world view that is subject to ongoing and continuous revision, or change as additional observation into the deeper features of nature lead to an expanded and more complex world view, or theory.  Theory and observation are thus intimately connected, each feeding on the other in an ever-expanding process of increasingly deeper levels of understanding.

So for some it is sufficient to simply cast the coins or sticks of the I-Ching, and read the resulting interpretation from whatever book source appeals to them.  They do not want nor do they need any further explanation or understanding of system of thought that provides them with some meaningful perspective of their own life process.  However, for others who seek a deeper and more expansive perspective of such systems of thought, a theory like Novelty theory that is linked via mathematics and scientific principles to some mystical entity such as the I-Ching can open connections (portals) into their own direct experience in nature and the cosmos, and possibly expanding awareness.

*********************************************************************************

The idiomatic expression "five minutes to twelve“ (or 'In the nick of time' in English) can also evoke some sense of urgency, at least perhaps within the limits of free choice...  Is a sense of urgency really so, such that "we will get on this train“, or will be a no "or“ ?

*********************************************************************************

This is an interesting and thoughtful question that I think can be answered by evoking some of the fundamental features of quantum mechanics.  It is thought by at least some, including me, that the brain operates according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle on a fundamental level.  In other words, the fundamental operation of the brain is on a quantum level, or is probabilistic and not deterministic.  This then implies the potential of free will or probabilistic choice – or potential novelty in Timewave parlance.  Since the brain is also capable of habit, there is also a tendency for the mitigation of free choice to one degree or another.

Using the probabilistic principles of quantum mechanics we could potentially assign probabilities to any of our prospective choices.  Assume for a moment that our choices are binary – i.e. we either choose one specific mode of behavior or thought process or we do not choose such a behavior or thought process.  Our choices could then be assigned a probability that is based on the degree of habit that is present in the form of subconscious 'programming'.  The stronger the influence of subconscious habit, the more skewed our choices are in one direction or another.

The Mysteries of Quantum Mechanics
However, according to the principles of quantum mechanics such choices are still random, even if we can assign probabilities to them. There is no way to know with certainty which choice will manifest at any given moment in time, but only a probable choice.  This is the nature of free will or choice, as well as the nature of the quantum world; and it is very likely fundamental in the brain just as it is in any quantum domain.  Moreover, in the domain of quantum mechanics these processes are completely random; and yet from this randomness emerges the extraordinary beauty and order that we see manifesting all around us.  It is as though there is something in the fabric of space-time itself that draws out this fundamental order and beauty like some cosmic attractor state.  The fundamental operation of the human brain leading to the matter of choice can be viewed as totally random, albeit probabilistic.  Yet from this random nature emerges an overall pattern of choice moving in the direction of beauty, order, and increasing levels of interconnection and integration.

I see the Timewave as operating according to similar principles, or even identical principles to the quantum world.  In fact, all events are characterized by the Timewave as being either novel or habitual (non-novel).  During any given time-frame such events, whether they be informed by human choice or natural process, are totally random even if these events could be assigned probabilities.  Yet from this randomness or probabilistic free will  and choice, an amazing order, beauty, and integration all become manifest.  This could very well be seen as an historical attractor at the end of time, or an attractor state leading to some unknowable emergent form.

*********************************************************************************

Providence is a great word and I think that a spirit of some kind of primal justice is hidden in it. How do you think that it in fact functions? Some who are familiar with it and who would like to do something with themselves are face with a heavy load of contradictions from skeptics and the ignorant  – Exactly what will happen to us after the date 21. 12. 2012?

*********************************************************************************

I personally think that we live in a cosmos that is tolerant, forgiving, supportive, compassionate, dynamic, and one that is evolving.  This is my personal perspective based on a lifetime of experience in nature, dreams, mystical practice, and a career in physics.  I think that we are all allowed to create, then live in whatever 'realities‘ that we have chosen to create.  And by 'realities‘ I am referring to those life process states that are created by mind, imagination, emotion, attention, and intention.  Any reality is bounded by a set of rules, perspectives, beliefs, etc., and as long as one operates within the proper domain of any reality and adheres to its rules, it is a true reality.  It is only when one attempts to apply the rules, perspectives, etc., to realities that do not operate by such rules or perspectives that one gets into trouble with control, manipulation, and self-delusion.

The Grand Cosmos that must Surely be Awaiting Us
In addition, by simple detailed observation and conscious inspection it is clear that we live in a cosmos that is teeming with mystery and wonder. From my perspective, if one is bored then one is simply not paying attention.  It is apparent to me that by paying attention and by consciously engaging nature and one’s life process in an manner appropriate to the circumstances at hand, we can gain an expanding and deepening awareness of our nature and the nature of this mystery and wonder that abounds and that is also part of us.  There are no privileged positions here – everyone has access to the vast information content of the mysterious and wondrous cosmos that we inhabit. Whether this information content is carried by what is commonly called the unified or quantum field, or by some other fundamental cosmic feature, it is available to all who have the desire and passion to engage it head-on.

It is also my opinion, based on my direct experience and careful observation, that the cosmos we inhabit is just and caring; and that it does not force any particular reality or 'world view‘ on anyone.  As long as we have choices and are able to act on such choices, then we can be the architects of our own personal realities, and those realities can be both ever-expanding and inclusive.  I think that our primary duty to ourselves from this perspective, is to make conscious choices in the moment and then accept responsibility for the path that such choices present to us.  There is no need for the hubris of thinking one is 'better‘ or more 'advanced‘ here.  One’s choices simply allows one more or less 'degrees of freedom‘ to explore whatever hyper-dimensional domain that one wishes and is prepared to explore.

As an example, the person who chooses to become a rock climber by learning the necessary skills step-by-step, and then proceeds to utilize those skills to develop an expertise as a climber, is not better or more 'advanced‘ than anyone else.  She/he has simply learned and developed the skills necessary to explore and inhabit more expanded dimensions than have others who have chosen not to develop such skills and experiential awareness.  Notice that the choice to engage such process is both expansive of that person’s reality and it is also inclusive of other realities.  It does not make one more 'advanced‘ than anyone else, but has simply given one a set of skills and perspectives that allow oneself to explore and inhabit a somewhat higher dimensional domain that in fact includes all 'lower‘ dimensional domains.

No one knows what ‚will happen‘ after the 12/21/2012 date that so many are currently pondering.  I personally think that the Earth inhabitants and their systems are currently in a chaotic or 'cocoon' phase of evolution.  Whether one sees such an evolutionary process in terms of caterpillar-to-butterfly metamorphosis, or the 'trajectory‘ of a non-linear system, the final or attractor state remains 'emergent‘ or unknowable. This simply means that the nature and form such an end state or attractor state cannot be predicted given everything that it known about such systems prior to such chaotic, or 'cocoon‘ phases.  Even if the 'butterfly‘ state has an entirely different form and function, what happens to any of us will still depend on how our choices interact with a transformational phase or emergent state of this new form and function.  In the final analysis, I think that it will still be up to each of us to determine our own personal 'reality‘ in any case.

Some commentary out there is not short on optimism, and some even claim that it will be a "great ride“,  something like a spiritual show prepared only for us and for us alone. A cosmic merry-go-round. We all may be part of it, but does it really concern such a "collective“ and would this likely be such a trouble free“ transformation?

*********************************************************************************

I think that the best we can do when considering any process of metamorphosis or 'transformation‘ that might be upon us is to use the quantum world, non-linear system dynamics, or the metamorphosis from caterpillar-to-butterfly as philosophical templates.  Using a quantum world template we come back to the same description of nature that we discussed before.  From a random or probabilistic process that is producing events with assigned probabilities we get a cosmos with extraordinary beauty and order.  Such a process does permit states of conflict or suffering, chaotic phases, and destructive phases; but the overall tendency of the process is an expansion to increasingly higher ordered states.  The use of such a model and metaphor for a prospective 2012 event horizon allows one to conclude that whatever the 'emergent‘ state of being turns out to be, it has a high probability of being one of a higher-ordered state – one of expanded beauty and wonder within a more highly integrated system. I also think that how any given individual might function and experience such a state will depend largely on that individual’s capacity for conscious choice, and the assimilation of what may likely be more complex information.

Metamorphosis and  Emergence
Similar conclusions might be drawn when using a caterpillar-to-butterfly metamorphosis template.  There is no 100% guarantee that the caterpillar will transform into some type of emergent 'butterfly‘; but the probability is high that such a result will become manifest.  We as individuals in this case could be analogous to the cells of such an emergent creature, that have become more highly integrated to serve some greater whole or 'higher purpose'.  In this case there is no way to know what the form or nature of such an emergent 'creature‘ might be.  However, within the context of this final state of being, each individual would still likely maintain substantial freedom of choice that is governed by the form and function of such an emergent state.  As in the film The Matrix, some rules might be bent, and other rules might be broken.

If one also includes some of the features of non-linear systems dynamics – or chaos theory – one might conclude that we may very well be approaching an 'event horizon‘ through a perturbation phase, leading to bifurcations in the system.  This means that the system on the other side of the current trajectory and phase might be perturbed and split into 2 or more independent or separate trajectories, or paths.  This process of bifurcation could then result in several different trajectories or paths on the other side of  this 'event horizon‘ that would take individuals or groups of individual into entirely separate end states or emergent states, with each having its own future state attractor.  In the final analysis it is difficult to imagine an entirely 'trouble free‘ process at you call it.  Any birth process inevitably produces blood, some screaming, and is generally unpleasant.

You are mentioned in connection with this in an article on Viewzone - „Formula of behavior , that will guide the course of our destiny“.   But I think that this has not been the only examined hidden feature of I-Ching.  Through his analysis of I-Ching hexagrams, Terence McKenna created graphs expressing the so called Timewave.  Later the mathematician Mathew Watkins examined the mathematics an wrote his objection, which modified the graphs. What all can we learn from them?

********************************************************************************

I’ve already described my perception and experience concerning the evolution of the Timewave from its beginnings as the first order of difference for the King Wen sequence of 64 hexagrams.  I’ve also described the intervention of Matthew Watkins with his Watkins‘ Objection, and its implications for the Timewave.  A more detailed description of this process is included in my paper posted on my website.

The facts are that this is typically how science works.  Someone proposes a theory to describe the form and function of some feature of nature that has been observed.  In this case Terence proposed a theory of time based on the spatial flow of one mathematical feature of the I-Ching.  The I-Ching itself has temporal features (time-like) determined by the time period during which the coins or sticks are cast (thrown), and the time period that is related to the questions asked.  This theory is expressed graphically in form and function by the Timewave.  Since the mathematics are naturally embedded in this graphical form, they play an essential role in the transform from I-Ching structural features to Timewave structural features, which are then described and characterized by Novelty Theory itself.

Original vs Revised Timewave Graph
The original mathematics contained procedural errors that distorted the structural features of the Timewave and thereby distorting the underlying novelty features as well.  Watkins implied that these errors were fatal to the Timewave and Novelty Theory, whereas I thought that the errors might not be fatal if  they were corrected and the entire process formalized mathematically.  I performed this mathematical formalization, thereby correcting the errors uncovered by Watkins, and creating a Timewave that preserved much of the overall form of the Timewave and corrected its novelty distortions.  So the process was one of improving the mathematical development and expression of the Timeewave so that it had a better chance of rendering the novelty features of historical time more accurately.

Does a descending Timewave graph always mean something positive, and are graphical peaks considered the best events?  What a role does an ascending or descending graph play? What are the so called novel events, processes, or "Innovations“ ?

*******************************************************************************
Positive and negative are not the terms that I would use to describe the flow of the Timewave graph.  Novelty is a descending feature of the Timewave graph.  This means that novelty increases when the graph descends or decreases, and novelty decreases when the graph ascends or increases.  This is just a feature of the fractal expansion of the final number set that is calculated from the first order of difference number set.  Terence described a novelty decrease as 'habit‘ or a form of entropy where order is decreasing.  Novelty is the process in which new order (information) is created, or it can be seen as the breakdown of old and rigid forms that gives way to the creation of new forms.  Habit is the process in which existing forms continue to 'coalesce‘ or 'constellate‘ into repeating degenerate patterns, or increasingly rigid forms.  In these terms 'innovations‘ are seen as novel because they represent the breakdown of old and calcified form that gives way to new and more fluid form.

It should be noted here that the expression of Novelty in the Timewave graph is very broad and general.  On a planetary scale Novelty is either increasing or decreasing in the most general sense.  This means that the sum total of all events that could be characterized by the concept of  Novelty during any given time period or scale is either increasing or decreasing.  Notice that any given single event such as the invention of the printing press, the birth of Christ, an earthquake or volcanic eruption, and global or local wars could each be characterized using the concept of Novelty that was described previously.  The question then arises as to which event(s) of any given simultaneous set of events is dominant and therefore influences the novelty direction of the Timewave.  If a planetary conflict like a world war (entropy or habit) is simultaneous with another event of planetary scale like the discovery of general relativity (information or Novelty), then how would the Timewave graph respond to such a co-temporal event set if one event is considered novel while the other event is considered habitual?   In the general plot of the Timewave graph there is no way to tell which of these events would be dominant without assigning a specific novelty value to specific events.

However, there are mathematical techniques for extracting specific information from any general waveform.  These techniques actually extract frequency or spatial information for a given waveform, depending on whether the waveform is temporally dependent or spatially dependent.  Fourier transform analysis and wavelet transform analysis are two widely used mathematical techniques for extracting such information from a general waveform.  This is precisely what I have been attempting to do with the Timewave software that I am in the process of writing.  Example graphs of such analyses are shown on my website.

What a message, if any, would you give to our readers?

********************************************************************************

Any meaningful message would depend on who your readers are.  In general though, I would let the readers who want to draw their own conclusions, consider the scientific or mathematical concepts that I’ve described so far.  Additionally, for readers who can relate to a more mystical perspective, I would also pass on messages that I’ve received in dreams.  As I said earlier, dreams and dream-time have been a significant part of my life process as far back as I can remember.  They have provided me with information, guidance, life process insights, warnings, visionary imagery, healing etc.  One of the most significant and meaningful dreams that I’ve had over the past two decades concluded by giving me a clear, powerful, and deeply felt message.  That message informed me in strong and very clear terms that there is truly nothing for us to fear; and that we are all part of something, which is also part of us, that is compassionate, extremely large and unbounded, and so extraordinary that even our clever and creative imaginations cannot begin to grasp its true nature.  That message was one of assurance, not only for me but for anyone who was willing to hear it.  Even though we all have to deal with our more routine life process and struggle, we should always remember and hold in our awareness what I experience as this great cosmic truth.  We are not alone, and we are all part of an unbounded, compassionate, and creative consciousness that is loving,  and that wants us to succeed and grow in form and awareness.
